Late on August 1, a vigorous tropical wave emerged off the coast of Africa. The wave developed a mid-level spin, and on August 2, the National Hurricane Center began to monitor the wave. The wave slowly organized, and on August 4, the storm became Tropical Depression Six. The system then strengthened into Tropical Storm Florence.
As of 11 a.m. AST (1500 UTC) August 4, Tropical Storm Florence is located within 30 nautical miles of 14.8°N 30.6°W, about 415 mi (665 km) west of the southernmost Cape Verde islands. Maximum sustained winds are 40 knots (45 mph, 75 km/h), with stronger gusts. Minimum central pressure is 1002 mbar (hPa; 29.59 InHg), and the system is moving west-northwest at 14 kt (16 mph, 26 km/h). Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center of Florence.
